Red Visions, Red Pleasures

The bedchamber was small, dark, and overstuffed with a huge fourposter canopy bed festooned with crimson curtains, windowless walls bedecked in tapestries depicting fertility rites, and a wash basin and table. The candelabrum in Lidia’s hand filled the cave like room with unearthly red light, elongating the shadows formed by every object and making them dance upon the ceiling. There was no window and, curiously, the door seemed to lock from without rather than from within.

“That is strange,” muttered Sophie, her brow furrowed as she flopped drunkenly onto the bed.

Lidia said nothing. She took hold of Sophie’s heeled boots and pulled them from her feet. She untied the laces of Sophie’s bodice and eased Sophie’s skirt from her hips. She undressed Sophie with cold efficiency until Sophie was left wearing nothing but her sheer slip dress. Her nipples stiff and dark beneath the gauzy material. Her breasts heaving as she sprawled beneath the canopy of the bed.

“Stay with me?” moaned Sophie, running a hand over her breasts and caressing between her thighs.

There was a sparkle of interest in the maid’s glassy blue eyes, but she tightened her lips and turned away from Sophie. The slender young maid departed quickly and Sophie, already fading into unconsciousness, heard the final thump of the lock being turned from outside the room.

Sophie fell into a slippery, red-hued dream world. She pulled at her shift and felt it tear from her ample curves like the soft paper that wrapped a gift. She staggered free of her room, swaying as she walked down the silent castle halls. She heard laughter, moans, and she followed the sound. Her bare feet padding on the carpeted hall.

She arrived at a bathing chamber, a shallow pool upon the floor where reclined the beautiful countess in all her naked glory. Her breasts jeweled with ruby droplets of blood. More blood gushed from above, splashing across the face and into the open mouth of the countess. She moaned and laughed, gulping down the red liquor that spilled from above.

Sophie pressed herself to the doorframe, intoxicated by the perverse sight. She leaned into the room and saw that two women, young, beautiful, and naked, were suspended from the ceiling above. Their throats slit. Their eyes rolling as they bled out onto the countess.

“No,” gasped Sophie, stumbling back into the hall.

She ran, repeating that single syllable again and again as she fled from the horror of Countess Borciano and her demented bath. She heard something behind her. Hissing like a serpent. She cast a glance over her shoulder and saw the countess, naked and smeared with blood, running on all fours like a lizard. But she did not crawl upon the floor, she crawled upon the castle’s ceiling and moved with a speed that Sophie could not hope to outrun.

“No!” screamed Sophie, her fear rising nearly to madness.

Sophie ran in a panic and fled through the first open door she saw before her. It was the door to her bedchamber, slamming shut behind her and locking with that same thump of finality.
